Standing across the borders of Shingu and Hisayama in Kasuya-gun, and Fukuoka’s Higashi-ku, Mt. Tachibana is 367 meters tall and boasts the nationally designated natural monument, the “Virgin Mt. Tachibana Camphor Forest.” In ancient times, it acted as the border between Munakata-gun and Kasuya-gun, and in the Edo period, it stood as the dividing line between Kasuya-gun on one side, and Kasuya-gun (alternate spelling) on the other. In the middle ages, Tachibana Castle was built as a base for the ŌTOMO Clan’s rule of Chikuzen, and in addition to being the site of the battle with the MŌRI Clan, is known for being the castle that TACHIBANA Muneshige was able to protect from the Shimadzu assault, earning an exceptional promotion from to the lord of Chikugo Yanagawa Castle from TOYOTOMI Hideyoshi. Mt. Tachibanayama has many noteworthy points but another is that from the remains of the castle site at the summit, one can see the Shingu townscape and, through the pine forest, a beautiful view of Okinoshima Island. |
