| Overview |
The island of Itsukushima (Miyajima), a small island located in the Seto Inland Sea about 500 m off the mainland, has been a sacred place with the whole island becoming the object of worship. The island has been home to the Itsukushima Shinto Shrine,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the 21st century, reports have been made on the
existence of ritual sites from the 6th to late 8th centuries among the boulders of the
mountaintop and hillside of Mt. Misen. At the foot of the mountain, ritual artifacts of
the late 5th century and after have been also identified in the surrounding area of the
Itsukushima Shinto Shrine. Itsukushima Shinto Shrine is the shrine that had originally
worshipped one of the three Munakata goddesses, Ichikishimahime, and has become one
of the most important shrines in Japan since the 12th century. |
