| Overview |
The property is located on Anthony Island, the southernmost of the archipelago of some 150 islands on the Pacific Ocean. It consists of remains, including ruins of ten cedar longhouses of the village occupied until the end of the 19th century by the indigenous Haida people, and four shell mounds, two cave dwellings and tombs considered built 2000 years ago. Totem poles
almost 10 m in height display artistically carved figures of killer whales, human beings, or mythological images. They were created to honor important persons or serve as tombstones. They are alsothought to have been used in celebration of a specific occasion where luxurious goods were exchanged between tribal clans. |
