This movie is a collaborative video production that takes that romanticist notion as its stepping-off point.
Mt. Fuji, as depicted numerous times by Hokusai, was the object of worship of many an Edoite, but long before that, there was the “Sacred Island” floating in a sea that carried so many people, things, and so much culture to Japan.
The name of the World Heritage site that includes that island is “Sacred Island” of Okinoshima and Associated sites in the Munakata region
The following is an entirely fictional account of Hokusai and Okinoshima, but please enjoy this telling of the secret history of the “Sacred Island” of Okinoshima, pride of Japan, painted with the brush of Hokusai with the use of cutting edge video technology.
This video was made for the 260th anniversary of the birth of Hokusai special exhibition “Hokusai-Complete” held at Tokyo Midtown (2021.7.22 - 9.17) .
