Overview |
Tōmigahana, jutting out into the Hibiki Sea, takes its name from the watchtower that was placed here in the Edo period, and as such, it’s a location where one can see the Hibiki and Genkai Seas, as well as the islands therein, and there’s a small lighthouse (Myōkenzaki Lighthouse) that was set there in 1966. Misaki Shrine, on the eastern side of the small peninsula, used to stand on the utmost tip where the current lighthouse stands, and assembled the faithful to pray for safe seafaring under the name Myōken Shrine (providing the origin for the name Myōkenzaki). In addition, the surrounding terrain is designated as a Fukuoka Prefectural natural monument, as “Iwaya Tomigahana’s Ashiya Group Grotto.” On clear days, Okinoshima Island can also be seen from this small peninsula. The area also boasts “Kanpo no Yado Kitakyushu,” lodgings that feature spectacular views that include Okinoshima Island. |
