Okinoshima Yohai spot
Name |
Presumed Former Site of Keishi Shrine |
Classification |
Okinoshima Island Observation Spot |
Address |
Hatsu, Okagaki-machi, Onga-gun, Fukuoka |
Overview |
It’s believed that once Keishi Shrine stood on the cliffs overlooking the sea at the northern foot of Mt. Yugawayama, which is now jointly enshrined at the Maki shrine in the mountains of southern Yugawa district. Before the Edo period, when the tutelary deities were transferred from Itsukushima Shrine to Fukutari Shrine (Sue, Munakata city), legend has it that the goddess Ichikishimahime-no-Kami was first, and a stone monument reading “Sacred Landing Ground of the Goddess at Fukutari Shrine” stands along the coastal road. From here, Okinoshima Island can be directly viewed, and that may have some relation to the abovementioned folklore. |
