Mt. Mikasa (Kasugayama Primeval Forest) lying in the east side of Heijo-kyo (Nara capital), which was the capital of Japan in the 8th century, has been considered the sacred mountain to which deities descend and the tabooed land of the Kasuga Taisha located at the foot of the mountain. The shrine, established around the middle of the 8th century, is the shrine of the Fujiwara family. Remains of ancient rituals related to rocks have been found in the mountain, but their details including dates are unknown. |
