The property consists of three sacred sites
and the pilgrimage routes that connect them.
They form the cultural landscapes that reflect
the fusion of Shintoism, rooted in the ancient
tradition of nature worship in Japan, and
Buddhism, which was introduced to Japan from
the Asian continent. They reflect a persistent
and extraordinarily well-documented tradition
of sacred mountains over 1,200 years, and
demonstrate the development of the Japanese
syncretic religion of Shugen-do. |
