The property consists of 48 Buddhist monuments including the oldest surviving wooden buildings in Japan built from the late 7th to early 8th centuries. They are masterpieces of wooden architecture that illustrate the adaptation of Chinese Buddhist architecture and layout to Japanese culture and the subsequent development of a distinct indigenous style, and had a profound influence on later religious architecture. They indicate the early introduction of Buddhism to Japan, and continue to exist as temples. |
