Address
Overview Potala Palace is the main temple of Tibetan Buddhism (Lamaism) rising on top of Red Mountain at an altitude of 3700 m. Both Lhasa and Potala literally mean "holy place" in Sanskrit. In the 7th century, Songtsen Gampo, who married princesses of Nepal and the Tang Dynasty, built a palace-fort complex of the largest architecture in Tibet using the side of the mountain. The palace, with unique Tibetan traditional art of mural paintings and sculptures, has been home to successive Dalai Lamas, and contains images of Buddha and many volumes of Buddhist scriptures. In the area, there are ancient Lama temples that constitute the eight most beautiful places of Lhasa.
