Overview |
The property, located near the border of Cambodia and Thailand, is composed of religious constructions forming a sanctuary dedicated to the supreme Hindu deity Shiva. Preah Vihear Temple was built in the first half of the 11th century, but its history dates back to the 9th century when the Khmer Empire was founded. The temple, situated atop a cliff overlooking the vast plain and the Dangrek Mountains, is of an architecture adapted to the natural environment and the religious function of the temple, with exceptional quality of carved stone ornamentation of a mountain temple. |
