The property contains the remains of a megacity of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to 12th centuries, that had been destroyed by the Siamese invasion in 1431 CE. The largest site, Angkor Wat, was constructed as a Hindu temple taking approximately 30 years for completion, and is a masterpiece of Khmer culture. Angkor Thom had been a religious city surrounded by walls 8 m high, of which the temples constructed by successive kings and monk quarters remain. |
