Overview |
The property comprises six small and large islands located in the Onega Bay of the White Sea in Northwestern Russia. In the 15th century, the Russian Orthodox Solovetsky Monastery was built followed by many other monasteries. The monastery was also renowned as a strong fortress. During the Soviet era, the site served as a prison camp, and later a naval camp for the Soviet Northern Fleet. |
