| Overview |
Lying 11.6 km off the coast of mainland Ireland, the island of Sceilg Mhichíl in its entirety, surrounded by steep sides, has been registered as World Heritage site. A Christian monastery was founded on the island becoming a place of worship, but after the close of the monastery, the island was uninhabited becoming a place of pilgrimage. Owing to the extreme remoteness, the site of the monastery at its early stage is well preserved. |
