| Overview |
The property consists of four islands and two reefs, lying 185 km off the coast of mainland Scotland. It supports the largest seabird colony in the North Atlantic, and megalithic monuments built more than 2000 years ago have been also found on the island
of Hirta. The islands bear evidence of people who had lived on
farming and raising sheep and dwelling in traditional stone
houses, but are uninhabited since 1930. |
