Description |
Nara Sansai (Ch. Sancai) is a colorful style of glazed pottery with three hues of lead glaze (white or transparent, green, and yellow-brown). Fragments of Sancai pottery from Tang China were excavated at Site 5. The technology with which this piece was created indicates that it was produced in Japan. It was used only for special occasions, such as state rituals. It represents a new stage in which unique objects were created in Japan as a result of overseas cultural exchanges.
