Age Dated/Dedicated to Munakata Teiichi-gu (Hetsu-gu)by Kuroda Mitsuyuki, Third Lord of Fukuoka Clan, in Enpo 8 (1680)
Description There are five groups of votive pictures of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets, dedications dating from between the Momoyama period and the Edo period. This was a standard model composition of the Fukuoka clan’s artists-on-retainer and of the Kano school which dominated the Japanese art world at the time, and these are considered important artistic pieces that give us a look into the art world of Chuuou and Chikuzen. Additionally, from Daigûji, to clan lords, to parishioners, there are dedications from people of various classes, which also makes them important historical materials that tell us about the trends and attitudes of the people who visited Munakata Shrine when these works were created, as well as gives us a look into their religious practices. Of these, those dedicated by Kuroda Mitsuyuki and the ones dedicated between 1573 and 1591 by Munakata Daigûji Ujisada have drawn attention for their artistic merits.
